Added later: I liked this book. It was well written and very Faulkneresque, because it gave the reader a view of the town, in particular the social scene at the club and the issues of class and religion. It was interesting to read The Assistant by Bernard Malamud soon after, which addressed the issues of religion again. I think that the era of anti-semitism in literature is almost over, or the theme of "Who is Jewish, Who is not" does not run through as many books as it seems to have done for the the first half of last century.
